This chapter is an introduction to statistics and to quantitative methods. It explains the basic language used in statistics, the notion of a data file, the distinction between descriptive and inferential statistics, and the basic concepts of statistics and quantitative methods. book. This book uses the basic structure of generic introduction to statistics course. However, in some ways I have chosen to diverge from the traditional approach. One divergence is the introduction of R as part of the learning process. Many have used statistical packages or spreadsheets as tools for teaching statistics.
Welcome to Applied Statistics with R! About This Book This book was originally (and currently) designed for use with STAT , Meth-ods of Applied Statistics, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It may certainly be used elsewhere, but any references to “this course” in this book specifically refer to STAT R’ and therefore this book is fully reproducible using an R version greater or equal to All analyses and results, including figures and tables, can be reproduced by the reader without having to retype a single line of R code. The data sets presented in this book are collected in a dedicated add-on package called HSAUR accompanying File Size: 2MB.
Note that the statistics and programming aspects of the class ramp up in difficulty relatively quickly across the first three courses. By the third course will be teaching advanced statistical concepts such as hierarchical models and by the fourth advanced software engineering skills, such as parallel computing and reproducible research concepts. Statistics also involves language and units: when a statistician (or layman) provides a statistic, it involves a number and a label of some sort. For instance, the number is not in and of itself a statistical value; "an average age of years," however, is a statistical value/5.

Statistics is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. In applying statistics to a scientific, industrial, or social problem, it is conventional to begin with a statistical population or a statistical model to be studied.
